Bette Calman always radiant and dressed to the nines in bright jumpsuits, lipstick, and earrings, she looks nowhere near her age of 83 as she can contort herself into even the most advanced yoga poses.

This Australian inspiration has been teaching yoga for over 40 years, and says that she can do more with her body now than she could 50 years ago.  She teaches up to 11 classes a week.

Bette, thank you for shutting down all of my excuses (I’m tired, I’m busy, blah, blah, blah) as to why I shouldn’t practice today!  I hope to be half the yogini you are someday!!!

How cool is this …

Eclectic 3.0: The Roads Less Traveled from Ross Ching on Vimeo.

The Roads Less Traveled -  Traveling makes me feel free.  This video reminds me of my travels.  I always thought that I was going away to “find myself”.

I traveled all over the world only to realise what I was looking for could only be found within me.   The silence living in the present moment.  You can find all of this too by simply stepping onto a yoga mat.

Yoga is the greatest way to connect my body and soul.   It was not the physical side of the yoga class that got me it WAS the silence.

video: Imagine Yoga on the Streets

Can you imagine how intimidating it would be to have any of these people in your local yoga class??? While some of the poses in this clip are standard staples in a regular practice – shoulder stand, backbend, etc. – most of these are asanas difficult for even the most flexible of the human pretzels! The majority of the poses featured are positions that take years, even decades, to achieve. However, sometimes it’s the challenge of these asanas that create lifetime practitioners because everyone who loves yoga has dreams of achieving at least one of the most difficult poses.

What is your lifetime “dream pose”? Have you achieved it yet?

Yoga in the Park, Beach, Garden …

September 7th, 2009

Yoga from alexandre fischer on Vimeo.

Yoga practitioners are packing up their mats and moving outdoors! Everywhere you look, there are more and more yoga activities taking place in parks, on beaches, in gardens and more. Some yoga schools have weekend events appealing to the masses, and some have smaller practice groups. Fans of outdoor yoga say the fresh air, sun warming your back, and beautiful views make this a very special practice.  The feel of the breeze, scents of flowers or the ocean, sound of chirping birds… what could be more delightful?

Have you ever practiced yoga outside? Was it by yourself or with a group? Was it a good experience and would you recommend it to others?

Here’s an interesting Tweet today from Founder of Anasara Yoga John Friend (@anusarafriend): Handstand split during hike to Green Lake. Three Sisters wilderness, Oregon tour.

What is Pranayama? BKS Iyengar Demonstrates…

September 6th, 2009

There is one thing which connects us all – the breath. We all have to breathe, we all have to fill our lungs with oxygen, and then exhale that breath in order to release carbon dioxide and other wastes. Our body requires this process to continue in order to fill the blood cells with oxygen, giving us energy and allowing our bodies to process nutrients for health.

Pranayama, literally, means the control of breath, or yoga breathing. During a yoga practice, you will breathe in and out during a movement or a position in order to keep the oxygen flowing in your body, allowing more relaxation and deeper stretching.

This controlled breathing also allows the mind to focus and the body to release its stress from the day. Some studies have also shown that continued focus on the breath can help increase the power of the immune system and to help sharpen the mind.

Check out this pranayama demonstration by B.K.S. Iyengar and wow what a beautiful sound!
